The building complex was built in 1911 with extensions to the rear in the 1940s and 1960s. It is a protected structure/site owned by Limerick Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB). The demo building is a recreational hall (gymnasium) to the rear of the northern site, which will be the testbed for the LL-IE.

Project partners TUS and LCETB met at the Demo building in Limerick in November to establish a timeline of works and identify test areas for the installation of insulation panels. LCETB organised the drilling of boreholes on this day to identify the building typology. It was confirmed that the building is made from mass concrete and has reinforced beams in the ceiling. This timeline of works is now being closely monitored during fortnightly meetings between project partners TUS and LCETB.

Representatives from LCETB have met with a conservation architect regarding pilot Green Roof requirements and provided the local planning department with an overview of the project to determine whether planning permission is required for the test bed.

Within TUS, there has been a lot of activity in the last few months. TUS SDRI are working on the specification for the Green Roof pilot, the BIM model of the Gymnasium and greater campus is in development, and we will commence monitoring the building performance (U Values) in January.

TUS PRISM is developing a range of biobased insulation materials which will be laboratory tested before being installed in the Demo Site next summer.
